Question: Longevity of Creator Runs

I was wondering — and I will be doing proper research on the question —
but has anyone had a longer continuous run on a daily comic strip than
Charles Schulz?

The ones that come to mind as possible contenders are Lee Falk (but I’m
not sure how long he worked directly on the strip — he still might!) and
Leonard Starr (unclear on the dates). Maybe V.T. Hamlin? I’m afraid I
might have missed someone, particularly someone less obvious. Any ideas?

FAQ: The rec.arts.comics hierarchy (short!)

The rec.arts.comics hierarchy includes the following groups:

rec.arts.comics.alternative     Alternative (non-mainstream) comic books
rec.arts.comics.creative        Write your own characters (Moderated)
rec.arts.comics.dc.lsh          The Legion of Super-Heroes
rec.arts.comics.dc.universe     DC Comics’ shared universe and characters
rec.arts.comics.dc.vertigo      DC’s Vertigo imprint
rec.arts.comics.elfquest        The Elfquest universe and characters
rec.arts.comics.european        European comics and bandes dessinees
rec.arts.comics.info            News & FAQs (Moderated)
rec.arts.comics.marketplace     All buying and selling
rec.arts.comics.marvel.universe Marvel Comics’ shared universe and characters
rec.arts.comics.marvel.xbooks   Marvel’s X-Men and related books and characters
rec.arts.comics.misc            Everything not appropriate for another group
rec.arts.comics.other-media     Movies, TV, toons, toys, etc. based on comics
rec.arts.comics.reviews         Reviews (Moderated)
rec.arts.comics.strips          Comic strips and editorial cartoons

A few things which occasionally cause confusion:
1. Buying and selling ONLY in rec.arts.comics.marketplace, please, regardless
of what you’re buying and selling.
2. TV and movies, etc., ONLY in rec.arts.comics.other-media, please, regardless
of what characters you’re talking about.
3. Industry discussion, "how do I break in", etc. is inappropriate in
rec.arts.comics.creative, which is a fiction newsgroup.  Please use
   rec.arts.comics.misc instead.
4. "misc" in "rec.arts.comics.misc" means "everything else", NOT "everything".
If it goes in another group it *doesn’t* go in rec.arts.comics.misc.
5. General announcements generally go in rec.arts.comics.misc (or .info)
or at most into a few groups.  Don’t post the same thing to every group,
   please!

In addition, please read the FAQs (in any group) or look for them at
http://www.idyllmtn.com/rac or http://www.bonner.rice.edu/morrow/faq/

Welcome to rec.arts.comics!

HCI build your own page

Has anyone else tried the Houston Chronicle Build Your Own Comics Page?

I was very happy to find out about this.  It’s just what I’ve been wanting.
I can start a page building and when I come back…it’s all there for me
to see without all the "backs" and waiting!

Now if I can just afford a 56k modem…

Daily Doodle: End of the Road series, online [self-promo]

I do hope this message of self-promotion isn’t too intrusive into this
group, but I’d like to issue this open invitation to visit my website
on the remote chance that you might enjoy my little effort I call

:: DAILY DOODLE ::

Daily Doodle has usually been pretty much what it sounds like, a daily
graphic of some sort or other, maybe something scanned, maybe
something created entirely in-computer; maybe b&w, maybe 16-color,
maybe funny, maybe just a sketch, whatever I feel like, indulgent
self-web-publishing at its daily doodliest.

However, right now (Monday 4 August), Daily Doodle has just entered
the fifth and final week of a series titled

:: END OF THE ROAD ::

Set in a time when flying cars have become the norm and the old
gas-guzzlers are almost gone, a family takes a final road trip.
Hurry by, as the beginning of the series will only be online for about
another week.

So drop in and see what you think. The comics are free, but donations
(spare a buck, bud?) are welcomed at MINDFUL 74005-1215 USA.
Emails of comment are always welcome, also, at mind…@sprynet.com

Rejection letter

Last Saturday, I received the worst rejection letter imagineable from
one of the major syndicates.  If you want to see it, visit the Jargon
website.  You’ll laugh.  You’ll cry.

Re: garfield copyright?????

In article <33DABC02.3…@penn.com>, jo…@penn.com wrote:

> what are the copyright laws about drawing your own pic ????

Who drew the pic is basically irrelevant.  If your use of the
picture takes advantage of the popularity and recognizability
of another’s work, then you are legally required to get permission
from the copyright holder, or you may face civil prosecution.
So if you draw the pic and keep it to yourself, there’s no problem.
But once it’s published or distributed, you’re liable.

The only exception is parody, which is covered by the First
Amendment protection of free speech, and even then the protection
is narrowly defined and limited.
