Early Strip Reprints

Hi All:
Anyone out there have some of the early strip reprints for sale?  I’m
most interested in the Cupples & Leon hardcovers, with dj’s, as well as
"Forty Years with Mr. Oswald" (1968) and "King Aroo" (1953).  Thanks!

Best,
Rob

The world's worst comic strip has sunk to a new low!

It seems that in spite of all my begging and pleading for everyone
in this newsgroup to STAY AWAY from my worthless comic strip
(the Bruno the Bandit Homepage at http://www.wordplay.com/bruno/),
a few of you have indeed visited.  The hate mail and death threats I
have received have been, um… colorful to say the least!  As for those
of you who were a little kinder in your critiques, by merely stating
that Bruno "sucks like an Electrolux", well, you brought a tear to
my eye.  I only wish my strip was worthy of such a high
description…

Am I writin’ in Chinese here, folks?  How much clearer can I be?
Keep away from my web page!  I recommend having the above
web address tattooed backwards on your forehead.  That way,
every time you look in the mirror, you will be reminded of the one
and only web site that you should never, ever visit.

With love to all,
Ian

The future of Blondie

Now that Stan Drake is no longer with us, anyone know who’s taking over the
art on Blondie?

Fox Trot UFO story and Heaven's Gate

While flipping through a copy of the Indianapolis Star at McDonald’s
(not a paper I’m too fond of, but there wasn’t anything else to read), I saw
below the FoxTrot strip a notice saying something about how the strip was
drawn before the Heaven’s Gate suicide and the story had nothing to do with
this incident. The thing is, it took two lines’ worth of space to fit this in,
and at the expense of squashing the FoxTrot strip into a compressed, squarish
look to do it! Ugh. Is this the only paper that has done this? I didn’t see
anything like this in the Lafayette (Indiana)
 Journal-Courier or the Chicago Tribune.
Has the Star done anything like this in the past?

COMIC ART & BOOKS

I’ve recently compiled a 10 page list of comic strip and
illustration-related original art and books for sale.  I will mail out
hard copies of the list on Monday and will begin emailing the list on
Tuesday.  If anyone is interested in receiving an email copy of the
list, please contact me.  The list was done as a Word document and will
be sent as an attached file.  Some folks who don’t have Word have been
able to view it, though the format might change.  Thanks very much.

Best,

Why do we read the comics we hate?

Subject line says it all. We all have comics that we hate; from the
frequent complaints, "B.C." seems to be the most-read-and-hated strip out
there. But then people who haven’t gotten more than a chuckle out of
"Garfield" for a decade keep reading it, and complaining about it not being
funny; people who can’t stand "The Family Circus" go on reading it and then
talking about how it doesn’t have any humor to be exhausted.

So why do we go on? Is the newsgroup, presumably composed mostly of
people literate and critical enough to seek out and study the best that the
genre has to offer, trapped by the same force of habit that makes "the common
masses" write letters to complain that they (somehow) detected that
today’s "Andy Capp" was an accidental reprint of one from last week?
Or is it more that comic strip art is such a tiny (in many ways) portion of
each newspaper, we can’t help but read all of it, just out of need to see
*something*, even if we hate it?

And, if the latter is the case, how does the influx of comic strips
available online influence matters?

FAQ: The rec.arts.comics hierarchy (short!)

The rec.arts.comics hierarchy includes the following groups:

rec.arts.comics.alternative     Alternative (non-mainstream) comic books
rec.arts.comics.creative        Write your own characters (Moderated)
rec.arts.comics.dc.lsh          The Legion of Super-Heroes
rec.arts.comics.dc.universe     DC Comics’ shared universe and characters
rec.arts.comics.dc.vertigo      DC’s Vertigo imprint
rec.arts.comics.elfquest        The Elfquest universe and characters
rec.arts.comics.european        European comics and bandes dessinees
rec.arts.comics.info            News & reviews (Moderated)
rec.arts.comics.marketplace     All buying and selling
rec.arts.comics.marvel.universe Marvel Comics’ shared universe and characters
rec.arts.comics.marvel.xbooks   Marvel’s X-Men and related books and characters
rec.arts.comics.misc            Everything not appropriate for another group
rec.arts.comics.other-media     Movies, TV, toons, toys, etc. based on comics
rec.arts.comics.strips          Comic strips and editorial cartoons

A few things which occasionally cause confusion:
1. Buying and selling ONLY in rec.arts.comics.marketplace, please, regardless
of what you’re buying and selling.
2. TV and movies, etc., ONLY in rec.arts.comics.other-media, please, regardless
of what characters you’re talking about.
3. Industry discussion, "how do I break in", etc. is inappropriate in
rec.arts.comics.creative, which is a fiction newsgroup.  Please use
   rec.arts.comics.misc instead.
4. "misc" in "rec.arts.comics.misc" means "everything else", NOT "everything".
If it goes in another group it *doesn’t* go in rec.arts.comics.misc.
5. General announcements generally go in rec.arts.comics.misc (or .info)
or at most into a few groups.  Don’t post the same thing to every group,
   please!

In addition, please read the FAQs (in any group) or look for them at
http://www.idyllmtn.com/rac or http://www.bonner.rice.edu/morrow/faq/

Welcome to rec.arts.comics!
