Bloom Country – Classics of W Lit

Some of you might be interested in knowing that I was able to pick up a
copy of "Bloom Country – Classics of Western Literature" at my local
Barnes and Noble (Massapequa Park, LI (NY)) for $3.98.

Does this book contain the complete canon?

DOCTOR FUN has moved : WWW/FTP/Gopher

Reports of Doctor Fun’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Doctor Fun, the Internet Cartoon, has moved to sunsite.unc.edu.
The URL is: http://sunsite.unc.edu/Dave/drfun.html

You can also get Doctor Fun via anonymous ftp from sunsite.unc.edu in
the directory pub/electronic-publications/Dr-Fun.  This directory is
also available via sunsite’s Gopher.

Please inform me of any problems you have with the Doctor Fun www
pages.  There are some loose ends with the gopher stuff (like missing
indexes) which will be fixed shortly.

We currently do not have a www redirector for Doctor Fun on
neuromancer.lib.uchicago.edu, because the web server is up and down,
so spread the word on the new URL to your friends and loved ones.

Thanks for your patience.  Enjoy.

Segar and Popeye

Yes, Ol’ Man Segar was definitely the only person capable of drawing (and
writing) Popeye.

I worked in a Newspaper printing department years ago, and did archive
work on the side.  Their morgue had Popeye strips going back to when they
started carrying it in 1932!

Comparing these strips (most of which are found in Fantagraphics EXCELLENT
series) with anything produced since Segar’s 1938 death leads to big
disappointment…especially with Sagendorf, who was Segar’s _assistant_!

The top-notch artwork, the skilfully-rendered action sequences, the
*incredible* subtle (and often dry) humor, and the human characteristics
of the characters, are sorely lacking in the watered-down insipid
descendent that *calls* itself "Popeye".

TRIVIA QUESTION::  Swee’ Pea is NOT the real name of Popeye’s adopted baby.
Swee’ Pea is only an endearment term…However, the baby does have a real
name, given as Popeye christened him. (Wiyh spinach, I might add)
For two points :-) , what is Swee’ Pea"s REAL NAME?

(hint:  it’s long!)

Sherman's Lagoon

Sherman’s Lagoon is a hilarious strip that has been running in the
Honolulu Star Bulletin for about three years. Does anyone else
get it in their newspapers? It is hard to believe that such a funny
strip would be only local.

On August 17, 1933, Popeye christened a foundling with a big bowl of spinach
and the words, "I do hereby chisten ya by the names of `Scooner Seawell
Georgia Washenting Christiffer Columbia Daniel Boom.  An’ tha’s that."

No, you’re not the only one!  I think you don’t hear so much about it
because not many papers seem to carry it.  It’s always the first strip
I read in the Houston Chronicle.  I like the Sunday strips better than
the dailies- the "Memoirs of a Genius Amongst Swine" strip from a few
weeks ago was one of the best.

BTW, Has anyone ever seen any Robotman books other than Cyberpunktrek?

Mad's Maddest Artist Don Martin

Is there anyone on the net which might tell me whatever happened with
Mad’s Maddest Artist Don Martin ? Since 1988 he didn’t publish anymore,
and I never found out why.
